My paintings are developed from shapes, lines, texture, negative space and color inspired from urban landscapes. The paintings are explorations of creating harmony between spontaneity and control within a designated space. I hope to create honest paintings where the viewer can find beauty within imperfections.
I record my observations in a sketchbook and with a camera. Structures, arches, angles, color and texture become points of interests. Sketches are transferred onto the painting surface using loose line drawings. Next, I apply layers of color, value, and line variation to create color depth harmony.
Throughout the process I explore the balance of adding and subtracting brushstrokes, lyrical line marks, drips and color. After the surface accumulates into a chaotic state I begin to eliminate lines and areas to establish harmony with simplicity.
